Pulitzer Nominee Scores Solo Art Show
Painter Michael Robinson To Have Reception
In Downtown Lafayette From 1PM to 2:30 PM, May 21, 2022
LAFAYETTE, CA — Michael Robinson, an award-winning former reporter for the Kansas City Star, San Francisco Examiner and Oakland Tribune, will have his cutting-edge contemporary paintings exhibited at the Town Hall Theater Art Gallery through May 31.
Robinson is having an artist reception and talk on Saturday, May 21 from 1 PM to 2:30 PM. The event includes a cash bar, live music and a raffle for Robinson art merchandize. The theater is located at 3535 School Street; entrance to the event is free, and masks are not required.
This is the first solo art exhibit for Robinson, a Pulitzer Prize nominee and published author of a critically acclaimed nonfiction book about the nation’s savings and loan crisis of the 1980s.
To say that Robinson, 65, has followed a circuitous path to becoming a cutting-edge contemporary painter is an understatement.
Before getting into the visual arts at age 60, he spent years as a Bay Area rock and blues musician, releasing four CDs and playing more than 100 live shows.
He’s been featured in more than a dozen California newspapers as well as in the New York Times and Wall Street Journal.
Titled “Moods For Moderns,” Robinson’s exhibit features unique originals that highlight his three main formats — abstract figurative, mid-century geometrics and modern surrealism. All paintings in the show are available for sale.
Robinson is particularly regarded for his love of big ideas and for his bold color schemes. His major influences are Kandinsky, Miro, and Klee.
Armed with a playful attitude, he’s becoming known for a deceptively simple style imbued with hidden meanings and cultural references, often quoting titles or lyrics from rock music.
Along with the late painter Rolf Scarlett and the late author Norman Mailer, the paintings in the show refer to the bands Motionless in White, Godsmack, the Beatles, Crown the Empire, and Jimi Hendrix. The show’s title, Moods for Moderns, alludes to a song by Elvis Costello.
